A small child listens, speaks, and then learns to read and write. Reading and writing are advanced stages of language development. The natural order for L1 & L2 is listening, speaking, reading, and writing. You don't have to translate when you are young. If you were able to learn your first language without translation, you should be able to learn a foreign language in the same way.
