The speech of the North Germanic tribes, known as Old Norse or Old Scandinavian, showed little dialectal variation until the 9th c. Runic inscriptions dated from the 3rd to the 9th c. were carved in the original Germanic alphabet known as the runic alphabet or the runes. The Icelandic language is one of the Nordic languages, a subgroup of the Germanic languages.
